Lubrication

Lubrication

SOLID FRICTION (Metal to Metal Contact)

Function of lubrication :

  • To reduce friction or resistance to the motion
  • Reduced friction means reduction in heat
  • Reduced friction means less power consumption

How lubricant does it :

  • When a fluid is placed between the surfaces of the solid bodies in motion, liquid friction replaces solid friction, reducing the friction
  • Oil is a true “newtonian liquid” as its molecules slide over each other at the rate directly proportional to the force making them slide
  • Hence oil is introduced between the moving metallic surface as a fluid medium to form a lubricating film
